-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- # CSSE scores 2 finalists in computer science innovation prize (Source: Engineering e-bulletin - Friday 6th August 2010, Melbourne School of Engineering) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CSSE scores 2 finalists in computer science innovation prize Congratulations to Professor Peter Stuckey and Professor Raj Buyya from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, who have been chosen as finalists in the Australian Museum's Google Australia Eureka Prize for Innovation in Computer Science. The $10,000 prize, sponsored by Google, is awarded to a team or individual for a recent innovation in computer science that has the potential to improve the lives of many Australians. Professor Stuckey has been nominated for his work on Lazy Clause Generation, which is a new approach to combinatorial optimization problems, such as rostering in hospitals, scheduling trains and allocating water. By combining the strengths of constraint programming and Boolean satisfiability, Lazy Clause Generation finds optimal solutions to problems, saving time, money and reducing environmental impact. Professor Buyya has been nominated for his work on the Cloudbus Project, which will see the internet evolve through cloud computing, allowing IT infrastructure and services to be delivered to homes similar to a utility like water, gas or electricity. Cloud computing aims to enable the dynamic creation of next-generation data centres by assembling services of networked virtual machines so that users are able to access applications from anywhere in the world on demand. The Cloudbus Project is a Melbourne initiative in cloud computing for conducting fundamental research on the design and development of different market-oriented cloud platforms for a range of applications. Professor Stuckey and Professor Buyya are two of three finalists nominated for the prize; the other is Associate Professor David Moss, from the University of Sydney.
